While I would like to start introducing myself in a Bond-like manner, “Wurtz, Tom Wurtz,” proposed federal legislation (S.1877) is way too creepy for me. On November 16, 2011, Robert Casey (D-PA) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) proposed legislation that would turn every adult in the United States into secret agent James Bond. Do police-states scare you as much as they scare me? Here’s the official text:
“Mr. CASEY (for himself and Mrs. BOXER) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. To amend the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act to require manadory reporting of incidents of child abuse or neglect, and for other purposes.”
MANDATORY REPORTING! What does that mean? Must I now watch my neighbors’ children and look for suspicious signs of foul play? What does “and for other purposes” mean? Who will decide that definition?
